Is it me? Am i…in charge?

You know what I love to do? I love to sit around and fantasize about someone else who can take charge and start living my life for me.

Any day now, this magical being is going to finally find my address, sweep through my door, possess my skin & bones and start DOING all the things I spend a lot of time thinking about doing.

In an episode of Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee, Alec Baldwin tells Jerry Seinfeld about “The Show Business Commission.”

From what I remember, TSBC is a secret organization that shows up at your door, says “we've been waiting for you”, and whisks you off to Hollywood to be the star you always knew you would be. All without any actual effort or participation on your part.

 Annnny day now…

It's the classic “knight in shining armor” fantasy. I am helpless in this world and so I dream of someone who will save me and make everything better.

It's true that you and I were, in fact, helpless at some point in our lives. That helplessness lies on a spectrum from simply being a baby to more traumatic experiences.

When we have this savior fantasy, some part of our brain believes that we are still helpless. That we can't trust ourselves. Or believe in ourselves. Believe that we have any power in our lives.

Logically, we know none of that is true. But if you've got a runaway brain like I do, here's what can help:

 1) Accept that no one is coming to save you. Really let that sink in. OK, yay! You are free! You are actually the hero!

 2) You are the only one who can change your life. You are in charge of your life. When you really get this and start taking action, you will see that you're much more powerful than you formerly believed.

 3) Speaking of action, make a list of 2-3 actions you could take this week to slowly move something forward in your life. Make them small and realistic and eeassssy. Do them.

Meanwhile, I'm going to stay home and place my bets on the TSBC (or, more accurately, the coaching business commission). JK JK, I'm gonna do stuff too.

 Happy Monday!

 Love,

 Jessica
